The professor that i interviewed was Feridon Shams. He has taught at HOward for close to 45 years and he is currently my political science teacher. Professor Shams did not intend on getting a degree in the social sciences. When he entered college he set out to earn a degree in biology so that he could go on to become a doctor. Once Shams began the course work for a degree in biology he realized that he would not succseed in this field so he switched to a political science major. According to Professor Shams, in order to be a great student you must first have excellent attendance. As a student of his, i have witnessed many incidences where Shams urged his students to come to class by discussing what will happen if you fail to regularly attend your scheduled session. He tells us that we can not simply look over our textbooks and expect to pass every test but, that we must “burn the midnight oil” if we want to be great at what we do.

Thurgood Marshall is a very prominate figure in the history of Howard Universty. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and he graduated from Lincoln University. After being denied acceptance to University of Maryland Laws School because of his race, he applied to Howard University’s School of Law and was admitted. After graduating law school, Marshall created a career upon over turning the idea of “seperate but equal”, winning numerous court cases, including Brown vs Board Of Education. In 1954, JFK appointed MArshall to the U.S. Court of appeals and President Johnson appointed Marshall to the U.S. Solicter General. Thurgood Marshall was a dynamic lawyer and judge and was known to many as the man who gave a voice to the voiceless. He died on January 24, 1993

This is a club geered toward students who are from DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Its were locals from these places gather and discuss issues relevent to them. The DMV club hosts parties and gogo’s which feature music that was derived in the DMV area.

NAACP

I would love to be involved with the NAACP at Howard because I joined the NAACP that was at my high school but there was not much that I could do to be really involved with the organization. SInce this is a HBCU, i would imagine that the NAACP would be really involved with the community

Campus Pals

This is a group of students which help introduce HU to new students. They help freshmen move in and show them around campus. They plan activities and gatherings for freshmen week so that everyone feels welcome. I would like to be involved with this club because i never got to be apart of my freshmen week and i think it would be alot of fun to be involved in freshmen week even if its not my own.

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Alpha chapter

The Delta Sigma Theta’s are a group of women who are focused on building community. The are successful career driven women who have created a legacy in American history. I would LOVE to be a Delta because all the women in my family who belong to sororities are Delta’s. They stand for the things that i believe in and play a dynamic role in giving back to the community.

College Democrats of America

This club gathers the students of the democratic affiliation to discuss politics. I would like to be apart of this club because I agree with the democratic beliefs and would like to be more educated in polotics

Desiree Hardy

ID: @02620708

3rd Colloquia: Dr. Fatimah L.C Jackson

Dr. Fatimah L.C Jackson did a presentation on, The Importance on Interdisciplinary Approaches in African American Studies. She proclaimed that it was important to incorporate data from diverse fields in addressing important research issues. She talked about how different people are as far as race, genes, chromosomes, and gender; that it was completely impossible to look at everyone in the same light, or spectrum.

The problem she suggested was that the diverse human genetics does not fit in the 1900 racial stratification models. Because everyone is so genetically different, it is impossible to look at everyone in old models. She then suggested a solution. The solution was the need for new approaches to comprehensively capture nuance of human biodiversity as it relates to health. She says that it is time to redefine and restructure the old models of the 1900’s to support the diversity of today.

Dr. Fatimah believes that the new models must encompass relevant cultural/behavioral diversity, genetic variation, and non-biological differences. She says that you cannot generalize form an individual level, or a racial level, which is too inaccurate and broad. She says that researchers can begin to create these new models by looking at local geographic group—such as third world countries—and use that as a basis to develop policies. Those policies should look at human diversity in a way that will do no harm, and optimize.

In a way, I understand Dr. Fatimah’s point of view, regarding the older models needing renovation. However, I do not particularly agree with her solution. I think that if we only took a look at third world countries, we would still be getting a broad, particular model. The model of the third world countries could not possible describe the countries that are not third world. Wouldn’t that be generalizing as well?

Dr. Fatima Jackson touched on many aspects our genes/heritage have a lot to do with how we are today. Dr. Jackson talked about how chromosomes can differ from person to person because of occupation. She explained when she studied glass blowers they had broken chromosomes.

There is a tool that Genealogist use to study and it is Ethnogenetic Layering. This a tool for sub-sculpturing involving the genetic layer, health risk layer, geographic layer and another type of layer essential to research.

I learned from the colloquium that you cannot demonstrate one race because there are many differences in location, family, and genealogy. Geography is the biggest factor in cultural and genetic exchange. Dr. Jackson discussed that Africans from West Africa and West Central Africa migrated to Chesapeake Bay (Jamestown), the Carolina Coast, and the Mississippi Delta. They were brought over here for their skills and ideas and to expand and modify in Americans.

People who moved from West Central Africa now inhabit the Carolinas also known as the stroke belt. Dr. Jackson has done research that the reason for this is that the Africans were not in an environment that was scarce in salt, then came to the Carolinas, had a lot of salt, and experience a salt in balance. This is her pathology to excess salt in African Americans. Also, she is conducting research with Breast Cancer in Chesapeake Bay and the Bight of Bonny of West Africa.

Dr. Jackson also touched on the fact that there is a generation every twenty years so in hundred years that will surmount to five generations. Anyone 3 generations from you is no more familiar with you than an average person on the street is.

Rodney D. Green, Ph.D. serves as Executive Director of the Howard University Center for Urban Progress, a unit designed to strengthen the University’s community service, urban research and community development agenda at local, federal, and international levels. He has directed 44 projects with a value of over $8 million dollars over the last seven years in this capacity. He has served as Howard University professor of urban economics for 25 years, authoring three scholarly books and over 40 journal articles. Dr. Green received his undergraduate degree in politics and economics at Yale University (Magna cum Laude) in 1970, and, after a tour of duty in the U.S. Army, went on to complete his M.A. and Ph.D. (1980) degrees in economics at the American University.

Dr. Green believes hard work and dedication makes for a good student. You have to be ficused, commited and able to give it your all. You must be able to be organized and put your prioroties first. Its not an easy journey, but if you want reap benefits you must endure sacrafices and ober come hardships.

I am unaware of any deceased academic figures in the Economic department, but if there was one it was a great loss. Howard is home to numerous great teachers in the field of economics. Im sure they will greatly prepare me for what I need to know and serve as a great foundation. It will be a successful start to my journey toward Law School.

When I asked my English Professor, Dr. Shinn, why he entered in to his field of study he was excited to share his love of words and the English language. He went on about how he loved writing and wanted to be involved with teaching the very thing that makes our world function so well. His idea of a successful student was one that is determined and does all they can to get the education available for them. A student that doesn’t give up and always tries their best will always be given the option to succeed. In his eyes a college education is for people that want more out of their lives and expect to be the best they can. Howard University is a great way for students to learn the past of African Americans and the opportunities there are for them in the future.

I researched Alain Locke and found he was a Philosopher that valued different styles and values in a Democratic society; commonly known as “cultural pluralism”. He encouraged many African American authors to set high standards for themselves. When he came to Howard University he was appointed an assistant professor of English. His ambitions led him to make Howard University a training ground for African American intellectuals. He wanted the University to be a center for African American culture and research on racial problems, but he was denied twice by the board of trustees because Howard was a nonracial institution. After that Locke went back to Philosophy.

I believe Dr. Shinn and Locke had the idea of students needing to know their past here at Howard to make a better future for African Americans in the future.

Intellectual Exemplar

For this assignment, I interviewed the English professor, Dr. Janet Reed-Caldwell.

First, I asked her about the focus and the major of her degrees. She revealed to me that she has a Master’s Degree in English and a Doctorate in adult and continuing education. I then asked her about her reason for choosing this field and direction she followed with her degrees. Her reply stated that she had always been able to diagram sentences well. Dr. Reed-Caldwell had always wanted to be a teacher. Since she was quite prosperous in English, she decided to pursue a career in education teaching the subject.

Then, I inquired about why she was currently teaching at Howard University. I found that she originally worked at Howard in the Center for Academic Reinforcement. After being away from the school for fourteen years she requested and was granted the opportunity to return and is now teaching Freshman Composition.

Finally, I asked Dr. Reed-Caldwell what in her opinion makes a successful student. She described a student is well read and continues to read, attends every class, completes all work in a timely fashion, and asks for help if necessary. She also considers a successful student as one who begins a career they enjoy, gets a terminal degree, and is financially stable.

—

Mary McLeod Bethune was a born in Maysville South Carolina in 1875. She was a brilliant educator. Extremely passionate about her field, she founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute for Negro Girls, known today as Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida. After reading about her life and her remarkable achievements, it is evident that the drive behind Bethune’s background in education was to advance the status and condition of black people, more specifically black women, in America. Her life and her accomplishments were all geared towards enriching the lives and projecting the voice of black women in this country.

The country that I chose to research is Germany. I picked this country because I lived there for two years, from ages 4-6. I remembered it being a fun place that was always covered in snow. I fell in love with the culture because the people were always friendly, and I was just a kid, so I was open to anything. However, I am older now so I wanted to take a look at the country from a more mature approach. Germany is Europe’s largest economic base. It is bordered by the Baltic Sea and the North Sea. It’s placement allow for it to survive off of shipping exports, which boost the country’s economy. Also, Germany is home to hundreds of beer breweries; the famous “Oktoberfest” is a great time of celebration for the German people, and instead of popping champagne they chose to chug beer! The life expectancy for males in 76 years and for women it is 82 years; because Germany operates on a government ran insurance plan the people there have better health care, without having to worry about the stress caused by competing insurance agencies. As far as government, Germany is a federal republic that operates with a civil law system that also includes judicial review. From looking at these facts, Germany seems to be the ideal place to live. However, like every other country in the world Germany also has its pitfalls. Germany is the second most populated European nation. Urban areas often suffer from over-crowding, though not to the extent as countries such as China. The German weather is not ideal; the winters are wet and the weather is usually cold and cloudy. Although the government health plan is working well, 53,000 Germans were reported to be living with HIV/AIDs in 2007. Germany also has a history of power struggles with its government; the most famous being the totalitarian rule of Hitler and the extermination of Jews by his Nazi party. I still believe that Germany is a beautiful country; however, it is not the Utopia that I remembered from my childhood.
